The rugged ridge behind Costa Cardonal harbors many beautiful and fascinating surprises - vistas over the bay as well as hidden canyons and caves.
Native plants abound in the crevices between tumbled boulders. Fossils in the eroded rocks speak of times millions of years ago when these cliffs were under water.
Signs are everywhere that all sorts of desert creatures - coyotes, foxes, lizards, snakes, jack rabbits, mice and ground squirrels, ospreys, owls, hummingbirds, and various "creepy-crawlies" - make their home here. It's both fortunate and unfortunate that most are rarely seen.
